Is It Necessary to Have Black Kitchen Cupboard Handles?

No. Black handles are popular because they photograph well, feel current, and pair easily with almost any cabinet colour. But popular isn't the same as necessary, and a handle finish that suits one kitchen can look flat or heavy in another. The better question isn't "should my handles be black?" but "what should my handles do for this particular kitchen?"

Here's how to decide.

Why Black Became the Default

Black hardware took off for a few practical reasons:

  • High contrast. Against white, light grey, or pale wood cabinets, black handles give the doors a crisp, graphic outline.

  • Neutral and low-risk. Black sits comfortably next to almost any palette, so it feels like a safe pick.

  • Hides fingerprints better than polished metals. Matte black in particular is forgiving in daily use.

  • Pairs with industrial and modern styles. It fits the trend toward matte finishes, black taps, and dark window frames.

None of these make it mandatory. They're reasons it works, not reasons it's required.

Black handles are everywhere right now, but they're a choice, not a rule. Here's when black hardware works, when it doesn't, and what to choose instead for your kitchen.

When Black Handles Work Well

Light or white cabinets. The contrast is the whole point. Black handles add definition to a kitchen that might otherwise feel soft or washed out.

Modern, industrial, or Scandinavian-leaning kitchens. Black hardware reinforces the clean-lined look these styles aim for.

Kitchens with other black elements. If you already have a black tap, black light fittings, or dark window frames, black handles keep the finishes consistent.

When Black Handles Don't Work as Well

Very dark cabinets. Black handles on navy, charcoal, or black doors can disappear, so you lose the detail without gaining contrast. A metallic finish usually adds more interest here.

Warm, traditional, or layered interiors. In a space built on warm woods, terracotta, and soft textures, black can feel cold or harsh. Brass, bronze, or aged metals tend to sit more naturally.

Small kitchens with busy layouts. Lots of black handles across many doors can create a spotty, cluttered look, which makes a compact room feel smaller.

Hard-wearing environments. Cheap black finishes can chip or scratch over time and show bare metal underneath. If you choose black, choose a quality finish, not just the lowest price.

Alternatives Worth Considering

  • Brushed brass or gold tones: warm and elegant, good against deep greens, blues, and warm neutrals.

  • Brushed or satin stainless steel: durable and practical, especially in kitchens that see heavy use.

  • Chrome or nickel: classic and bright, suited to traditional or transitional styles.

  • Matching the cabinet colour: handles painted or finished to match the doors give a seamless, understated look.

  • Timber or leather details: adds warmth and texture, and works well in organic, natural-material schemes.

  • Handleless or push-to-open doors: removes hardware altogether for the cleanest possible look, though it needs careful detailing and quality mechanisms.

How to Decide Without Overthinking It

  1. Look at your cabinet colour first. Light cabinets can take black easily. Dark cabinets usually want a lighter or metallic handle.

  2. Check the finishes already in the room. Taps, lighting, appliances, and flooring should feel like they belong to the same family.

  3. Decide what the handle should do. Add contrast, add warmth, or disappear? That answer points you toward a finish.

  4. Test a physical sample. Hold it against the actual door, under your actual lighting. Finishes look different in a showroom than in your kitchen.

  5. Think about daily use. Handles are touched constantly, so comfort, grip, and durability matter as much as colour.

A Note on Commercial Kitchens and Cafes

In commercial settings, such as a cafe back-of-house, a restaurant pass, or a front-of-house service counter, durability and cleaning come before colour. Stainless steel is often the practical default because it tolerates heavy use and frequent sanitising. In customer-facing areas, handle finishes can support the brand's look, but they still need to hold up to daily wear.

The Bottom Line

Black handles are a good choice for the right kitchen, not a requirement for every kitchen. Choose the finish that suits your cabinet colour, your overall style, and how hard the kitchen will be used. If black does all three, great. If not, there are plenty of better options.
